Let \(Y\) be a K3 surface over a finite field \(k\) of characteristic \(p\). If \(\ell\) is a prime number \(\neq p\), consider the \(\ell\)-adic cohomology group \(H^ 2 (\overline Y, \mathbb{Q}_ \ell)(1)\) of the surface \(\overline Y\) obtained by passing to the algebraic closure of \(k\). Then one has a natural splitting \(H^ 2 (\overline Y, \mathbb{Q}_ \ell)(1) = NS (\overline Y)_ \ell \bigoplus V_ \ell(Y)\), where \(NS (\overline Y)\) is the Néron-Severi group and \(V_ \ell (Y)\) is the subspace representing the \(\ell\)-adic cohomology classes of all transcendental cycles of \(Y\). Then the Galois group of \(k\) is a procyclic group having a canonical generator \(\varphi\). The aim of the paper under review is to study the characteristic polynomial \(\text{det(id} - t \varphi, V(Y))\).
