Let \(B= B_ n\) be the unit ball of the complex \(n\)-dimensional space \[ C^ n= \{z= (z_ 1, z_ 2,\dots, z_ n): z_ j\in C,\;j= 1,2,3,\dots, n\}. \] If \(V\) is a measure on \(B\) with \(V(B)= 1\), then the Bergman space \(A^ 2(B)\) is a subspace of \(L^ 2(B, V)= L^ 2(B)\) consisting of holomorphic functions. If \(u\in L^ \infty(B)\), then the Toeplitz operator \(T_ u\) with symbol \(u\) is the bounded linear operator on \(A^ 2(B)\) defined by \(T_ u(f)= P(uf)\), where \(P: L^ 2(B)\to A^ 2(B)\) is the orthogonal projection defined by \[ P(h) (z)= (\pi i)^{-1} \int_ B {f(w)\over (1- (z, w))^{n+ 1}} dV(w),\qquad z\in B. \] If \((1- (w, z))\phi_ z(w)= az- (1- | z|^ 2)^{1/2} (w- z)\), where \(a\) involves \(| z|^{-2}(w, z)\), and if \((\overline\Delta u)(z)= \Delta(u\circ \phi_ z)(0)\), where \(\Delta\) is the Laplacian operator, then a function \(u\) is said to be \(M\)-harmonic if \(\overline\Delta u= 0\) on \(B\). In the main results of this paper the authors show that (i) if \(f+ \overline g\), \(h+ \overline k\) are pluriharmonic symbols for two commuting Toeplitz operators in \(A^ 2(B)\), then \(f\overline k- h\overline g\) is \(M\)-harmonic, and (ii) if \(u\), \(v\) are pluriharmonic symbols for two commuting Toeplitz operators in \(A^ 2(B)\), and if \(u\) is a non-constant holomorphic function, then \(v\) is holomorphic. The results indicate conclusions on the unit ball \(B\) similar to earlier results of \textit{S. Axler} and \textit{Z. Čučković}, Integral Equations Oper. Theory 14, 1-12 (1991; Zbl 0733.47027).
