Since translation planes of order 16 have been classified by \textit{U. Dempwolff} and \textit{A. Reifart} [Geom. Dedicata 15, 137-153 (1983; Zbl 0532.51003)], the authors deal with translation Laguerre planes. Using a similar method like Dempwolff and Reifart they search for translation ovals in the eight translation planes of order 16 and subsequently for 2- pencils of these ovals. Although in some of these planes there are considerably more translation hyperovals through two infinite points than in the Desarguesian plane, such pencils only exist in the Desarguesian plane and in the Hall plane. From this they deduce the following: Every translation Laguerre plane of order 16 is ovoidal over a translation oval, which is either a conic or a pointed conic. In particular, all derived planes are Desarguesian. This work on translation ovals checks results of \textit{W. E. Cherowitzo} [J. Comb. Math. Comb. Comput. 9, 39-55 (1991; Zbl 0745.51005)], who independently conducted a computer search for all ovals in the translation planes of order 16. The authors' results are consistent with his.
