Let \(M\) be a real hypersurface of a quaternionic projective space \(QP^ m\), \(m\geq 2\), \(A\) the shape operator of \(M\), and \(D^ \perp\) the three- dimensional subbundle of \(TM\) obtained by applying the almost Hermitian structures in the quaternionic Kähler structure of \(QP^ m\) to the normal vectors of \(M\). The author proves that \(\nabla_ XA=0\) for all \(X\in D^ \perp\) if and only if \(M\) is congruent to an open part of a tube around the totally geodesic subspace \(QP^ k\) of \(QP^ m\) for some \(k\in\{0,\ldots,m-1\}\). The main idea of the proof is show that \(AD^ \perp\subset D^ \perp\) and then to apply the known classification of real hypersurfaces in \(QP^ m\) with \(AD^ \perp\subset D^ \perp\). The complex analogon was studied by \textit{M. Kimura} and \textit{S. Maeda} in [Tsukuba J. Math. 15, No. 2, 547-561 (1991; Zbl 0762.53039)].
