The author investigates the limit behaviour of shifted convolution powers of probabilities on topological groups. Starting point are the investigations of \textit{I. Csiszár} [Z. Wahrscheinlichkeitstheorie Verw. Geb. 5, 279-295 (1966; Zbl 0144.395)] and \textit{A. Tortrat} [C. R. Acad. Sci., Paris 258, 3813-3816 (1964; Zbl 0126.338) and Ann. Inst. Henri Poincaré, N. Sér., Sect. B 2, 279-298 (1966; Zbl 0168.156)]. Hence, a locally compact group \(G\) is called Tortrat group \([G \in \text{TO}]\) if for all \(\mu \in {\mathcal P}(G)\), for all \((x_ n) \subseteq G\) such that \((x_ n^{-1} \mu x_ n)\) has an idempotent limit point \(\mu\) itself is idempotent. For this class of groups we have (Theorem 2.1): If the shifted powers \(\mu^ nx_ n\) converge to a probability measure, then there exists a compact subgroup \(H\), such that \(\mu^ n x^{-n} \to \omega_ H\) and \(Hx = xH\) for all \(x \in \text{supp} \mu\). The author studies systematically the properties of the class TO; especially the structure of compact subgroups of \(G \in \text{TO}\), the behaviour of TO with respect to monomorphisms, quotients, closed subgroups, finite extensions and projective limits. In \S 4 the author considers examples of TO-groups: SIN groups, discrete groups, Abelian groups, furthermore MAP groups and connected nilpotent groups are TO. (On the other hand e.g. affine groups do not belong to TO).
