The present paper proves once again that gliding hump arguments are useful in functional analysis for the proof of continuity (equicontinuity) of functions (sequences of functions) if closed graph theorems (boundedness principles) are not available in the given situation. As the author remarks on p. 71, the proofs using gliding hump arguments get simpler by the consideration of classes of sequence spaces satisfying a suitable gliding hump property (GHP). The main result of the paper, Theorem 4, contains a characterization of the continuity and additivity of functionals on Orlicz sequence spaces \(\ell_ \varphi\) (where the generating function \(\varphi\) fulfills a suitable condition \((\delta_ 2)\)). An essential condition in the characterization is an inequality which reduces to Young's inequality in the case of linear functionals. Each Orlicz sequence space as described above is an AK-space and has a suitable GHP and so Theorem 4 is an application of Theorems 1 to 3 where the author examines additive functionals on sequence spaces having a GHP.
