The authors propose a constrained formulation of the 3D Maxwell equations in terms of second-order wave equations. They develop a numerical approximation for both the fields and the Lagrange multipliers, based on the modified Taylor-Hood finite element. Preliminary results on unstructured meshes are presented in the cases of resonant cavities and coaxial finite element modes, showing the validity and the accuracy of the method.
