The authors investigate oscillation properties of the nonlinear third order differential equation \((*)\) \(u'''+ q(t)u'+ p(t)u^ \alpha= 0\), where the functions \(p\), \(q\), \(q'\) are continuous and \(\alpha>1\) is a ratio of two prime natural numbers. The starting point for this investigation are the ``linear'' oscillation results given in the monograph of the first author [Third order linear differential equations, Reidel, Dordrecht (1987; Zbl 0602.34005)]. Some of these results are extended using the linearization technique to \((*)\). A typical statement is contained in the following theorem. Theorem. Let \(q\leq 0\), \(q'<0\), \(p>0\) for \(t\in (a,\infty)\) and let the second order equation \(y''+ q(t)y= 0\) be disconjugate in \((a,\infty)\) (i.e., no nontrivial solution has more than one zero in \((a,\infty)\)). If \(\int^ \infty tp(t)dt= \infty\), then each solution of \((*)\) defined on \([t_ 0,\infty)\) \((t_ 0\geq a)\) with one zero oscillates in \([t_ 0,\infty)\). The results and methods of the paper are closely related to those given in the authors' papers [Arch. Math. Brno 28, 221-228 (1992; Zbl 0781.34026) and ibid. 28, 51-55 (1992; Zbl 0781.34024)].
