If \(X\) is a complete metric space and \(F_ i: X\to X\) are contractions for \(i = 1,2,\dots,N\), then there is a unique compact set \(K\) which satisfies \(K = \bigcap^ N_{i = 1}F_ i(K)\). The set \(K\) is called self-similar with respect to the contractions \(F_ i\); \(K\) is said to be finitely ramified if the cardinality of \(\bigcup_{i \neq j}(F_ \lambda(K) \cap F_ j(K))\) is finite. The Sierpinski gasket and Lindstrøm's snowflake are examples of finitely ramified fractals. The author explores the closely related concept of post-critically finite (P.C.F.) sets. He defines ``harmonic structure'' and ``regularity of harmonic structure'' on P.C.F. sets and uses them to define quadratic forms and Laplace operators. He then proves that the quadratic form is closed under the self-similar measure and provides sufficient conditions for a harmonic structure on P.C.F. sets to be regular. As an example, the author provides a one-parameter family of harmonic structures on the Sierpinski gasket which contains Brownian motion as a special case.
