Let \(P\) be a probability measure on a compact hypergroup with normalized Haar measure \(m\), and let \(D(P^ n)\) denote the Radon-Nikodym derivative with respect to \(m\) of the absolutely continuous component of the \(n\)-th convolution power \(P^ n\) of \(P\). The main result is that the following are equivalent: (1) \(\| P^ n-m\|\to 0\) as \(n\to\infty\). (2) For each \(\alpha\in(0,1)\), there exists a positive integer \(q\) such that \(m(\{D(P^ n)>\alpha\})=1\) for \(n\geq q\). (3) \(D(P^ k)\) is nonzero for some positive integer \(k\), and \(P^ n\) converges weak-* to \(m\). It is noted that, for compact groups, this result is an easy consequence of a simple lemma adapted from \textit{D. Aldous} and \textit{P. Diaconis} [Adv. Appl. Math. 8, 69-97 (1987; Zbl 0631.60065)]. The paper concludes with a brief account of some connections with earlier results on compact groups due to Y. Kawada and K. ItĂ´, B. M. Kloss, P. Bougerol, J. Rosenblatt, S. Glasner and others.
