Let \(A\) be an abelian variety of dimension \(n\) defined over a number field \(k\) of degree \(d\), and denote by \(E = \text{End}_k A\) the corresponding endomorphism ring. Suppose \(A\) has a polarization \(r\) (over \(\overline k)\) of degree \(\delta\). This may be used to define a ``Rosati discriminant'' \(D = D_r(E)\) of \(E\) with respect to the associated Rosati bilinear form. In this paper the inequality \[ D \leq C \biggl( \max \bigl( 1,h (A) \bigr) \biggr)^K \tag{*} \] is established, where \(h(A)\) is the (absolute logarithmic semistable) Faltings height of \(A\), the constant \(C\) depends only on \(n,d, \delta\) and the exponent \(K\) depends only on \(n\). The proof makes essential use of the authors' recent transcendence paper ``Periods and minimal abelian subvarieties'' [Ann. Math., II. Ser. 137, No. 3, 459-472 (1993; Zbl 0804.14019)]. In addition \((*)\) is then applied to problems of estimating isogenies and homomorphisms between two abelian varieties.
