The following rigidity theorem for real hypersurfaces in a complex projective space \(P_ n(\mathbb{C})\) is proved. Let \(M\) be a \((2n-1)\)- dimensional Riemannian manifold, \(n\geq 3\), and \(\iota,\hat\iota: M\to P_ n(\mathbb{C})\) two isometric immersions. If at each point of \(M\) (1) \(\iota\) and \(\hat\iota\) have a common principal curvature direction, and (2) the type number of \(\iota\) or \(\hat\iota\) is different from two, then \(\iota\) and \(\hat\iota\) are congruent via an isometry of \(P_ n(\mathbb{C})\). As an application they show that a homogeneous real hypersurface in \(P_ n(\mathbb{C})\) \((n\geq 3)\) for which each isometry is principal (that is, at each point there exists a principal curvature vector which is mapped to a principal curvature vector by the differential of the isometry) is an orbit under an analytic subgroup of the projective unitary group \(PU(n+1)\).
