Recall that a finite dimensional algebra over a field is called a monomial algebra if it admits a presentation as a bound quiver algebra with the ideal of relations generated by a collection of paths. The homological properties of this class of algebras are by now well understood. The aim of this paper is to introduce a class of left artinian rings, called the left monomial rings, which includes monomial algebras, as well as algebras given by species bound by zero relations, left (almost) serial rings, right serial rings, hereditary artinian rings and more. The authors show that many of the results obtained for monomial algebras hold for left monomial rings. They also show that to each left monomial ring \(R\) a monomial algebra \(A\) is associated such that the homological properties of \(R\) and \(A\) are similar.
