Let \(G\) be a bounded domain in the plane, and suppose that \(Q(G)\) is a Banach space of functions holomorphic in \(G\) with some norm \(\| f\|_ Q\), with certain properties, so that the usual spaces \(H^ p(G)\), \(A(\overline G)\) and \(L^ p(G)\) are all examples. The author gives criteria for bounded rational and polynomial approximation in \(Q(G)\) when \(Q(G)\) is reflexive, and also considers the problem of convergence of the Fourier series with respect to orthogonal polynomials when \(Q(G)\) is a Hilbert space. It is shown, for example, that if \(G\) is a bounded simply connected domain and \(Q(G)\) is reflexive then the condition that if \(G= \text{Int }\overline G\) is equivalent to the fact that each bounded analytic function in \(G\) is in \(Q(G)\) and permits a bounded rational approximation in \(Q(G)\). Under the same conditions on \(Q(G)\), the approximation is by polynomials if and only if \(G\) is a Carathéodory domain. In studying harmonic approximation, the author introduces the notion that the domain \(G\) has a Jordan boundary almost everywhere: There is a set \(A\) on the unit circle \(T\) such that \(\text{mes }A= 2\pi\) and the conformal mapping \(\varphi\) from the disk onto \(G\) has angular limits at all points of \(A\), and these limits are different for different points of \(A\). It is shown that this holds if \(G= \text{Int }\overline G\), and that the converse is false.
