The investigation of specific motions of a rigid body sometimes leads to cases that differ from any known situation and seem unexpected or even paradoxical, viz.: bifurcations of the vertical rotation form of an axisymmetrical body hung on a string; the apparent violation of Poincaré's rule governing the change of equilibrium configurations as a result of bifurcations; secondary bifurcations and their ``hard'' excitation in motion of the ``regular tossing'' (dangling pendulum) type; loss of stability under the influence of added constraints, etc. In the present article we do not seek to encompass the broad sphere of such phenomena, both long established and more recently discovered, but shall merely discuss certain examples that illustrate the foregoing.
