Instead of discretizing the partial differential equation directly, the author discretizes both the Hamiltonian function and the Hamiltonian (Poisson) structure, and then forms the resulting ordinary differential equations. The stability, accuracy, and dispersion of different explicit splitting methods are analyzed. The circumstances under which the best results can be obtained, in particular, when the Hamiltonian can be split into linear and nonlinear terms are studied. Many different treatments and examples are compared.
