Let \(G \subset GL (V)\) be a reductive algebraic group acting linearly on a finite-dimensional vector space \(V\). We say that \(G\) admits a finite coregular expression (f.c.e.) if there exists a group \(\widetilde G\) such that \(G \subset \widetilde G \subset GL (V)\), \(|\widetilde G : G |< \infty\), and \(V // G \approx \mathbb{A}^s\). Theorem 1. Let \(G\) be a connected semisimple group admitting an f.c.e. Then \(V // G\) is a complete intersection. This result easily follows from the next one, which concerns finite group actions on conical varieties. Recall that an irreducible affine variety \(X\) is said to be conical if the algebra of regular functions \(k[X]\) is positively graded: \(k[X] = \bigoplus^\infty_{i = 0} k[X]_i\) and \(k[X]_0 = k\). In this case the ideal \({\mathfrak m} = \bigoplus^\infty_{i = 1} k[X]_i\) is maximal and the corresponding point is called the vertex of \(X\). Theorem 2. Let \(X\) be an irreducible affine conical factorial variety, and let \(F\) be a finite group of graded automorphisms of \(X\). If \(X // F \cong \mathbb{A}^s\), then \(X\) is a complete intersection. (The factoriality of \(X\) means that the algebra \(k[X]\) is UFD).
