As is well-known, the classical Schwarz-Pick lemma for the unit disk admits various extensions and generalizations in the several complex variable setting. Notable in these extensions is the Ahlfors type Schwarz-Pick lemma [see, for example, \textit{S. Kobayashi}, `Hyperbolic manifolds and holomorphic mappings', Marcel Dekker, New York (1970; Zbl 0207.379)]. In this direction \textit{K. H. Look} [Sci. Sinica 7, 453-504 (1958; Zbl 0085.068)] showed that if \(M\) stands for any irreducible classical Cartan domain, then for any self-mapping \(f \in \text{Hol} (M,M)\), \[ f^*S_ M \leq c(M,M)S_ M, \tag{*} \] where \(f^*\) is the pull-buck of \(f\), \(S_ M\) is the Bergman metric of \(M\), and \(c(M,M)\) is the Schwarz constant of \(M\). The value of \(c(M,M)\) is concretely given as \((\underline K_ M/ \overline K_ M)^{1/2}\) where \(K_ M\) and \(\overline K_ M\) are the infimum and supremum of the holomorphic sectional curvature of \(M\), respectively. In this paper, the author presents another generalized Schwarz-Pick type lemma for \(\text{Hol} (H,H')\) with respect to the Bergman metric, where \(H\) and \(H'\) are arbitrary homogeneous bounded domains. As an application, the author also considers two arbitrary (irreducible or reducible) classical Cartan domains \(M\) and \(N\), and provides a generalization of \((*)\) with an explicit value of the generalized Schwarz constant \(c(M,N)\). Moreover, he shows that, as expected, \(c(M,N) = \underline K_ M/ \overline K_ N)^{1/2}\). A discussion on the geometric meaning of the Schwarz constants is also presented.
