The paper identifies the space of left invariant nuclear operators from \(L^1 (G)\) to \(L^\infty (G)\). The author proves that this space is isomorphic to the subspace of almost periodic functions in the Fourier-Stieltjes algebra \(B(G)\). In the case where \(G\) is abelian or a minimally almost periodic group the isomorphism is an isometry. In general the isomorphic constant is at most the complex Grothendieck constant \(h\). -- The theorem was proved for abelian groups by Crombez and Govaerts and for compact groups by the author in an earlier paper. The proof in this paper has several components. The Herz-Varopoulos diagram is generalised to all locally compact groups, use is made of the tensor product of \(C^*\)-algebras, and the author finally proves that, for any locally compact group, every left invariant compact integral operator from \(L^1 (G)\) to \(L^\infty (G)\) is nuclear. Several questions are asked. In particular, are there any other classes of locally compact groups, apart from abelian and minimally almost periodic, for which the isomorphism is an isometry?
