The authors' work [J. Number Theory 28, 306-346 (1988; Zbl 0639.10031)] on sieves of dimension exceeding one depended on a plausible assertion concerning the existence and properties of a pair of equations of the type described by the current title. In the previous paper in this series [J. Number Theory 45, 129-185 (1993; Zbl 0790.11070)] this question was settled if the ``dimension'' \(\kappa\) of the sieve satisfied \(\kappa\geq 2\) or \(\kappa= 1.5\). In this paper the question is settled when \(1<\kappa <1.5\). The treatment involves some detailed numerical work and rests on the authors' results described in [Analysis 14, 75-102 (1994), see the review above].
