Numerical procedures are presented to simulate the propagation of waves in elastic and anelastic media. The equations of motion are stated in terms of a first order system for the velocity and the stress. Perfectly absorbing boundary conditions are used for the artificial boundaries of the model. Existence and uniqueness results are given for the solution of the differential problems. For the elastic case, the approximate solution is computed using an explicit procedure. For the anelastic case, the equations are stated in the space-frequency domain using complex frequency-dependent coefficients in the stress-strain relations. A naturally parallelizable algorithm is presented to obtain an approximate solution. The solution in the time domain is obtained using an approximation to the inverse Fourier transform.
