An inhomogeneous anisotropic plate of uniform thickness \(2h\) having in each point one plane of elastic symmetry parallel to the mid plane, is considered. A Cartesian coordinate system is chosen, such that the plane \(x_3 = 0\) coincides with the mid plane, and the \(x_3\) axis is directed downward. On the surface \(x_3 = - h\) a transverse load \(q(x_1, x_2, t)\) is prescribed, whereas on the surface \(x_3 = h\) the plate is free from external load. The material is assumed to be inhomogeneous through the plate thickness (laminated plates are an important class of inhomogeneous plates). Nondimensionalization and multiple time scales are introduced in the problem formulation. A uniform expansion of the field variables in even powers of a small plate parameter is obtained. The resulting differential equations are integrated successively. The equations for the asymptotic solutions are of the same form as those in the classical laminated plate theory. Displacements and stress components are presented by asymptotic solutions in systematic manner. Analytical solutions for a few problems with coupled equations can also be obtained. The free vibration characteristics of a symmetric cross-ply laminated plate are determined as an illustrative example.
