The function \(f(x)\in L_{p,\beta}\) is said to be measurable on the half-line \([0,\infty)\) and \(\| f(x)\|_{p,\beta}< \infty\), where \[ \| f(x)\|_{p,\beta}= \begin{cases} \left(\int^ \infty_ 0 | f(x)e^{-x/2} x^{\beta/2}|^ p dx\right)^{{1\over p}} &\text{if }1\leq p< \infty,\\ \text{Vari Sup }0\leq x\leq\infty| f(x) e^{-x/2} x^{\beta/2}| &\text{ if }p= \infty,\end{cases} \] and \(E_ n(f)_{p,\beta}= \inf\| f(x)- P_ n(x)\|_{p,\beta}\) denotes the best approximation of a function \(f(x)\in L_{p,\beta}\) by algebraic polynomials \(P_ n(x)\), where the degree is not greater than \(n-1\) in the metric space \(L_{p,\beta}\). The authors introduce the generalized translation operator by \[ T^ 0_ n(f,x)= {1\over \pi}\int^ \pi_ 0 f(R)\left(\sqrt{{R\over x}}\right)^ \alpha e^{-\sqrt{xh}\cos\phi}\cos(\chi\alpha- \sqrt{xh}\text{ Sin }\phi)d\phi, \] \(\alpha\in N\cup \{0\}\), \(h\geqq 0\), \(0\leq \chi\leq \pi\), \(R= x+ h+ 2\sqrt{xh}\cos \phi\), and \(\cos\chi=(\sqrt x+ \sqrt h\cos \phi)/\sqrt R\); and the generalized modulus of smoothness by \[ \bar w(f,\delta,\alpha)_{p,\beta}= \sup_{0\leq h\leq \delta} \| f(x)- T^ 0_ h(f,x)\|_{p,\beta} \] and establish the theorem. Let the numbers \(\alpha\), \(\beta\) and \(p\) be such that \(1\leq p\leq \infty\), \(\alpha\in NU\{0\}\) and \(-{1\over p}< \beta- \alpha< 1-{1\over p}\) for \(1< p< \infty\), \(0\leq \beta- \alpha< 1\) for \(p= \infty\), \(-1< \beta- \alpha\leq 0\) for \(p= 1\); then for \(f(x)\in L_{p,\beta}\) the following inequality \[ C_ 1 E_ n(f)_{p,\beta}\leq \bar w\left(f,{1\over n},\alpha\right)_{p,\beta}\leq {c_ 2\over n} \sum^ n_{\nu= 1} E_ \nu(f)_{p,\beta} \] holds, where the positive constants \(C_ 1\) and \(C_ 2\) do not depend on \(f\) and \(n\) \((n\in \mathbb{N})\).
