The author presents existence results for equations of the form \((G'(y(t)))'= q(t)f(t,y(t),y'(t))\), \(t\in [0,1]\), and \((G'(y)- p(t)H(y))'= -p'(t)H(y)+ q(t)f(t,y)\), \(t\in [0,1]\), with \(y\) satisfying boundary conditions \(y(0)= a\), \(y(1)= b\) (or \(\lim_{t\to 1-} G'(y(t))= b\)). Both weak and strong solutions are considered. Existence principles that are based on the theorems of the Leray-Schauder type permit to prove existence of at least one solution of the BVP. To study boundary problems the author develops two different approaches: a Bernstein-Nagumo theory and a Wirtinger theory (which is based on the use of extended Wirtinger inequalities and on \(L^ p\) norms). Some interesting examples are analyzed in detail.
