Analytical and numerical techniques are used to analyze in detail the stage I cold isostatic pressing (CIP) of metal powders. Plastic yielding is considered to be the only densification mechanism, and a recent constitutive model is used to describe the elastoplastic behavior of the metal powder. It is shown that, for the case of powder consolidation in a long cylindrical tube, a change in length is not possible, unless it is accompanied by some distortion (``shape change'') of the CIP specimen. We analyze also the coupled thermomechanical problem of hot isostatic pressing (HIP) of metal powders during stage I of the densification process. Densification of the powder is assumed to occur due to plastic yielding and creep of the metal particles as well as due to boundary and surface diffusion. The numerical implementation of the constitutive models in a finite element program is discussed.
