In this textbook, geometry is approached by way of models and motivated by its various applications. Axiomatics -- and consequently deduction from axioms -- is completely left out in favour of a broader coverage of topics. These are: Euclidean geometry, spherical geometry (with applications to mapmaking), conics (with applications to mirrors, navigation and planetary motion), projective geometry (with perspective drawing as a motivation and with applications to algebraic curves) and special relativity. This choice of topics requires more mathematical sophistication from students than the traditional axiomatic approach. Hyperbolic geometry is left out because it has ``practically no applications that are intelligible to undergraduates''.
