\textit{J. F. Queiró} and \textit{A. Kovačec} [Linear Multilinear Algebra 33, No. 3/4, 171-173 (1993; Zbl 0766.15023)] established an inequality for the modulus of the determinant of the sum of two normal matrices over \(\mathbb{C}\) involving their spectra. The authors discuss the equality case of this inequality and obtain a result in support of a longstanding conjecture of Marcus and de Oliveira [\textit{A. Kovačec}, Linear Algebra Appl. 201, 91-97 (1994; Zbl 0804.15005)].
