Let \(\rho : G \to\text{GL}(V)\) be a finite dimensional representation over \(\mathbb{C}\) of a connected reductive complex algebraic group \(G\). \textit{V. L. Popov} [Funkts. Anal. Prilozh. 10, 91-92 (1976; Zbl 0365.20053)] conjectured that equidimensional representations of semisimple \(G\) are cofree. The present paper is concerned with Popov's conjecture for certain non-semisimple \(G\). Recall that an algebraic action of \(G\) on an affine variety \(X\) (abbr. \((X,G)\)) is said to be cofree (resp. equidimensional), if \(\mathbb{C}[X]\) is \(\mathbb{C}[X]^ G\)-free (resp. if \(X \to X/G\) is equidimensional), where \(X/G\) denotes the algebraic quotient of \(X\). Moreover, \((X,G)\) is said to be stable, if \(X\) contains a non-empty open subset consisting of closed \(G\)-orbits. We denote by \(G'\) the commutator subgroup of \(G\) and say that \(\rho\) is relatively equidimensional (resp. relatively stable), if \((V/G',G/G')\) is equidimensional (resp. stable). Now, suppose that \(G'\) is symplectic and non-orthogonal (i.e., \(\text{rk }G' > 2\)). In the present paper, we determine relatively equidimensional and relatively stable representations of \(G\). As a byproduct, we obtain: Theorem. Suppose that the natural action of \(Z(G)^ 0\) on \(V/V^{G'}\) is nontrivial. If \(\rho\) is relatively stable and relatively equidimensional, then the restriction of \(\rho\) to \(G'\) is cofree. Our method is based on the paper [Ann. Inst. Fourier 45, No. 3, 681-705 (1995)] of the author and can be applied to other simple \(G'\)'s. Further classification and related results were announced at the 1994 meetings of the Mathematical Society of Japan by the author.
