A knowledge-based approach to the local area network design problem (Q1330416)

The paper addresses the issue of building intelligent software tools to design local area networks. The authors propose an expert system that, given requirements from the user, designs a local area network meeting these specifications. The expert system is implemented in NEXPERT OBJECT. Knowledge on network design was obtained from human experts and written sources. It is stored as rules in the knowledge base. These rules are divided into several modules according to their role. A substantial design examples is presented.
