Let \(Q\) be a parametric surface which has planar boundary curves and two planes of symmetry. The author introduces a method for best uniform approximation of \(Q\) by symmetric biquadratic tensor product Bézier surfaces \(Z\). The approximation of the interior of \(Q\) is based on the concept of \(H\)-sets due to Collatz. The author determines \(H\)-sets of \(Q\) consisting of two points and characterizes a best approximant \(Z\) by an alternation property of a deviation function and presents a Remes type algorithm for the calculation of best approximants to \(Q\). Using the fact that the boundary curves of each \(Z\) are best approximants to the boundary curves of \(Q\), the author gives a generalization of the main parts of his results for the case of any symmetric parametric surface \(Q\). Some numerical examples are presented.
