An a posteriori estimator for the modeling error of the heat conduction in a plate is derived. It is guaranteed to be an upper bound. A lower bound of the error is also provided. The asymptotic exactness of the estimator with respect to the thickness of the plate and with respect to the order of the model is proved. An adaptive procedure using this a posteriori error estimator is proposed. Numerical examples are discussed.
