Two types of discretization schemes based on an extension of the discontinuous Galerkin finite element method and on the finite difference method, respectively, are discussed for solving parabolic problems on grids with local refinement, both in time and space. A two-level preconditioned iterative method as a variation of domain decomposition (or block Gauss elimination) is proposed for computing the solution of the obtained system of linear equations. Numerical experiments to test the accuracy of the constructed schemes are performed.
