The problem of frictionless contact between two three-dimensional elastic bodies of arbitrary shape is considered and numerically solved. Using the inverse of the elasticity operators, the adequate reciprocal variational inequality is derived. The numerical solution is obtained by means of a boundary element approximation of the variational inequality, the related extremum principle, and the resulting quadratic programming problem. The procedure is highly efficient involving only one matrix inversion per contacting body. Moreover, a methodology for a data parallel implementation is presented where the computing system is configurated as a two-dimensional lattice of processors operating in an element-load point pair on the logical unit.
