Let \(X\) be a real Banach space and \(Y\) a proper subspace of \(X\). A bounded, linear map \(P: X\to Y\) is called a projection if \(Py= y\) for any \(y\in Y\). A projection \(P_ 0\) is said to be (i) minimal if \(\| P_ 0\|= \inf\{\| P\|: P\in P(X,Y)\}\), where \(P(X,Y)\) denotes the set of all projections from \(X\) onto \(Y\), (ii) strongly unique minimal projection if there is \(r\in (0,1]\) such that \(\| P\|\geq \| P_ 0\|+ r\| P- P_ 0\|\) for any \(P\in P(X,Y)\). The second author [J. Approximation Theory 64, No. 2, 181-202 (1991; Zbl 0741.41032)] studied strongly unique minimal projections in reflexive Banach spaces and he obtained a complete characterization of those hyperplanes that are the range of a strongly unique minimal projection in the space \(\ell^ n_ \infty\). In this paper this type of characterization is extended to hyperplanes in \(\ell_ \infty\) and \(\ell^ n_ 1\).
