The authors consider linear and nonlinear dynamical response of penny- shaped micro-cracks which are: (i) open, so that the normal component of the stress vanishes on both upper and lower surfaces of the crack; (ii) closed or fluid saturated cracks, so the tangential components of the stress vanish while the normal components of displacement and stress are continuous across the surfaces of the crack; (iii) open under tension but closed under compression; (iv) the closing type cracks under sliding friction. Assuming the total field to be periodic, the authors employ Fourier series expansion of the Green's integral representation of the scattered field in terms of the jump in the displacement field. The scattering cross-section is obtained in terms of integrals involving the Fourier coefficients, and low frequency asymptotes are discussed in case of the above four cracks. The graphs using numerical evaluations of the scattering cross-section versus angle of incidence are also presented in a number of interesting cases.
