This paper is concerned with the problem of plastic deformation of a single crystal in double-conjugate single slip. The authors use a micromechanical model based on the dislocation density evolution to provide a constitutive description. The gist of the model is the inclusion of the effects of mobile and immobile dislocation densities in the formulation for the plastic strain rates and the resolved shear stresses. The use of the adiabatic approximation, in which the mobile dislocation density is assumed to rapidly relax towards a quasi-steady state value dictated by the slowly evolving immobile dislocation density, makes it possible to solve the constitutive equations for the case of spatially uniform plastic flow. Linear analysis of stability of the uniform plastic flow with respect to band-shaped perturbations is carried out. The authors present numerical examples which permit a comparison with the previous analyses.
