Given discrete operators \(L_ 1,L_ 2,\dots\) defined for univariate functions on an interval \(I\), there are considered for bivariate functions \(f\) Bögel-continuous on \(Q= I\times I\) the Boolean sums \[ L_{m,n}= (L^ \bullet_ m+ L^*_ n- L^ \bullet_ m\circ L^*_ n)f\qquad (m,n\in\mathbb{N}), \] where \(L^ \bullet_ m f(x,y)= L_ m f^ y(x)\), \(L^*_ n f(x,y)= L_ n f^ x(y)\) whenever \((x,y)\) belongs to a certain square \(\widetilde Q\subset Q\), \(f^ y(x)= f^ x(x,y)\) if \((x,y)\in Q\). Under some appropriate conditions on \(\{L_ k\}^ \infty_ 1\), there is proved that the mixed moduli of continuity of \(f\) and \(L_{m,n}f\) satisfy for \(\delta,\eta\geq 0\) the inequality \[ \omega(L_{m,n} f;\delta,\eta)_{\widetilde Q}\leq c\omega(f;\delta,\eta)_ Q \] with a positive constant \(c\) independent of \(f\), \(m\), \(n\). This inequality can be treated as a two-dimensional analogue of the recent result of \textit{W. Kratz} and \textit{U. Stadtmüller} [J. Approximation Theory 54, 326-337 (1988; Zbl 0663.41025)]. Also, there is given the statement concerning the invariance of the Hölder classes under the terms of the Boolean sum \(L_{m,n}\) generated via a wide class of univariate discrete operators considered by \textit{B. Della Vecchia} [Boll. Unione Mat. Ital., VII. Ser. B, 3, No. 1, 125-136 (1989; Zbl 0692.41020)]. With the help of the above results, the degrees of approximation of \(f\) by \(L_{m,n} f\) in the Hölder-type norms are estimated.
