    The generalized Dirichlet series (GDS) in question are of the form \(Z(s) = \sum^ \infty_{n = 1} a_ n \lambda_ n^{-s}\), where \(\{\lambda_ n\}\) is an increasing sequence of positive numbers with \(a<\lambda_ 1 \leq b\) and \(a \leq \lambda_{n + 1} - \lambda_ n \leq b\) for \(n \geq 1\), where \(a\) and \(b\) are positive constants. The authors summarize the content of their paper as follows: ``If \(Z(s)\) is a GDS which has a functional equation of a certain type and \(F(s)\) is any member of a class of GDS which approximates to \(Z(s)\) then \(F(s)\) has \(\gg T \log T\) zeros in \(\sigma \geq {1 \over 2} - \delta\), \(T \leq t \leq 2T\), and sometimes \(\ll T\) zeros in \(\sigma \geq {1 \over 2} + \delta\), \(T \leq t \leq 2T\)''. More precisely, the relation between \(Z(s)\) and \(F(s)\) is assumed to be of the form \[ F(s) = Z(s) + \sum^ \infty_{n = 1}a_ n \bigl( (\lambda_ n + \alpha_ n)^{-s} - \lambda_ n^{-s} \bigr), \] where \(| \alpha_ n | \ll n^ \varepsilon\) for any fixed \(\varepsilon>0\). For instance, the results mentioned above hold for any fixed \(\delta>0\) if \(Z(s) = \zeta^ 2(s)\) and \(| \alpha_ n | \leq 1/3\); then \(\lambda_ n = n\) and \(a_ n = d(n)\) (the divisor function).
