Let \(P(D_ x)\) be a hyperbolic partial differential operator of order \(m\) with respect to a direction \(\vartheta \neq 0\) \((\vartheta\in \mathbb{R}^ n)\), that is \(P_ m (\vartheta)\neq 0\) where \(P_ m\) is the principal part of \(P(\zeta)\) and there exists a constant \(\gamma_ 0>0\) such that \(P(\xi- i\gamma \vartheta) \neq 0\) for any \(\xi\in \mathbb{R}^ n\) and \(\gamma> \gamma_ 0\). Let \(E(x)\) be a fundamental solution of \(P(D)\) whose support is contained in \(\{x\in \mathbb{R}^ n\); \(\langle x,\vartheta \rangle\geq 0\}\). The aim of this paper is to determine \(WF(E)\) and \(WF_ A (E)\) exactly under the hypothesis that the multiplicity of characteristic roots is at most two. \textit{M. F. Atiyah}, \textit{R. Bott} and \textit{L. Gårding} [Acta Math. 124, 109-189 (1970; Zbl 0191.112)] gave several conjectures on the description of \(WF(E)\), \(WF_ A(E)\) and the existence of lacunas. \textit{M. Tsuji} [Singularities in boundary value problems, Proc. NATO Adv. Stud. Inst., Maratea 1980, 317-326 (1981; Zbl 0471.35050)] gave a counter-example for one of their conjectures which is on the expression of \(WF(E)\). In this paper, the author points out that, though the example of Tsuji is true, his theorem contains some mistake, and the author corrected it in a suitable form.
