Classical divided differences of a function \(g \in C^ m(I)\) tend to \(g^{(m)}(x) /m!\) if all the nodes tend to \(x\). This result is improved in the sense that an asymptotic expansion is established, and extrapolation methods can be used. In the main part of the paper the results are extended to generalized divided differences in the sense of \textit{T. Popoviciu} [Mathematica Cluj 1, 95-142 (1959; Zbl 0091.246)].
