The purpose of this paper is to study certain representation functors associated to the special orthogonal groups that were introduced by Lancaster and Towber. These functors behave nicely with respect to change of the ground ring \(R\) and, when \(R = \mathbb{C}\), they coincide with Weyl's construction of the irreducible rational representations of \(\text{SO} (n, \mathbb{C})\) (with the usual exception when both \(n = 2m\) is even and the highest weight \((\lambda_1, \dots, \lambda_m)\) satisfies \(\lambda_m \neq 0\)). In general terms, the main question that concerns us here is that of describing connections between the above functors and the Schur functors associated to the corresponding general linear groups, so as to obtain characteristic free generalizations of various well-known characteristic zero results.
