This paper considers the solution of a control problem using a successive optimization algorithm based on the ``generalized work criterion''. A comparison of numerical computations is made using this algorithm and the classical maximum principle. This method of successive optimization algorithm was used previously by the same authors in a paper published in the Proceedings Fifth All-Union Scientific and Technical Conference on Flight Safety, Series 7, Aerodynamics and Flight Dynamics, Leningrad, 1988. It consists of starting with a similar but simpler problem and then, at each step, change the objective functional (for optimization), according to a formula ``predicting'' the best next optimization criterion.
