    In the first part of the paper, the author is concerned with linear boundary value problems of the form (\(u\) a vector-valued function): \[ u_{tt}+ A(x, D)u= 0 \] for \(x\in \Omega\); \(0< t\leq T\). \({\partial^ p u\over \partial v^ p}= 0\) on \(\partial\Omega\); \(p= 0,\dots, m-2\), and: \({\partial^{m-1} u\over \partial v^{m-1}}= 0\) on \(S_ 0\); \({\partial^{m-1} u\over \partial v^{m-1}}= q(x, t)\) on \(S_ 1\), where \(v\) is the unit outer normal on \(\partial\Omega\), \(\partial\Omega\) is the disjoint union of \(S_ 0\) and \(S_ 1\) and \(A\) is a strongly elliptic operator of order \(2m\). It is shown that, provided \(T\) is sufficiently large, for a large class of initial data \((u,u_ t)|_{t= 0}\), a boundary control function \(q\) can be found which ensures \((u,u_ t)|_{t= T}\equiv 0\). Also, if \(q\equiv 0\) then \(u\equiv 0\). A similar result for the Maxwell equations is also given.
