[The articles of this volume will not be indexed individually.] This is a new volume in the series ``Handbook of Statistics'', which has the purpose to help provide a beginning perception of environmental statistics with some examples that are of concern and interest today. Enviromental statistics is demanding more and more of non-traditional and innovative statistical approaches, because environmental studies involve space, time, and locally ingenious environmental sampling and monitoring. The chapters of this volume are classified under nine major headings: I. Environmental statistics as an emerging subject area; II. Environmental sampling and design; III. Environmental monitoring; IV. Statistical ecology; V. Environmental biometrics; VI. Systems modelling and analysis; VII. Spatial statistics; VIII. Statistical issues and methods; IX. Statistics in environmental regulation. The chapters specially prepared by several outstanding professionals involved in statistics and environment discuss the current state of the art in different areas of environmental statistics and provide new perspectives and problems for future research, training, policy, and regulation involving statistics and environment.
