    Let \(G\) be a group, \(H \leq G\), \(\mathcal C\) the conjugacy class of \(H\) in \(G\), \(k\) a field of characteristic \(p\), \(V\) a \(kG\)-module. Let \(^H V=\{v \in V :\) for all \(h \in H\), \(hv=v\}\), \(S(V)=\sum_{K \neq 1} {^KV}\), \(Q(V)=V/S(V)\), \(S^H(V)=\sum_{K\in{\mathcal C}} {^KV}\), \(Q^{(H)}(V)=V/S^{(H)}(V)\). \(G\) is \(p\)-smooth \(\Leftrightarrow Q(kG) \neq 0\). Otherwise, \(G\) is \(p\)-singular. Also, \(G\) is locally \(p\)-smooth \(\Leftrightarrow Q^{(K)} (kG) \neq 0\) for all non-trivial subgroups \(K\) of \(G\). Otherwise, \(G\) is locally \(p\)-singular. The main result of the paper is: Theorem. Let \(G\) be locally \(p\)-smooth for some \(p > 2\), and let \(S\) be a non-abelian simple section of \(G\). Then, one of the following cases occurs: (i) \(S \cong A_5\) or \(A_6\); (ii) \(p=3\) and \(S \cong L_2(7)\) or \(L_2(3^a)\) for some \(a \geq 2\); (iii) \(p > 3\) and \(S \cong L_2(p^a)\) for some \(a \geq 1\).
