For a finite set \(X\) of points spanning a projective space of dimension \(r\) sufficient conditions for the property \((N_{e,k})\) introduced by \textit{M. Green} and \textit{R. Lazarsfeld} [Compos. Math. 67, No. 3, 301-314 (1988; Zbl 0671.14010)] and by \textit{D. Eisenbud} and \textit{J. Koh} [in: Commutative Algebra, Proc. Microprogram, Berkeley 1989, Publ., Math. Sci. Res. Inst. 15, 157-172 (1989; Zbl 0736.14022)] are established. This result implies the following corollary: Assume that \(X\) contains a subset \(X_1\) of \(r\) points spanning a hyperplane not containing any other point of \(X\). If the union of \(X \backslash X_1\) and any point of \(X_1\) imposes independent conditions on forms of degree \(e\), then \(X\) is ideal-theoretically cut out by forms of degree \(\leq e + 1\). The case of a set \(X\) of \(r + 3\) points is considered separately and the graded Betti numbers of \(X\) are determined in many cases depending on the geometric configuration of the points. In particular, it is described how long the minimal free resolution of \(X\) is linear and a lower bound for the number of possible different minimal free resolutions of such \(X\) is given.
