The authors deal with the covers of the atoms in the lattice of varieties of relation algebras. They establish that there exist precisely three minimal relation algebras that are totally symmetric. The results are connected with computer-assisted developments of relation algebras. The authors ask whether there are other infinite minimal simple relation algebras.
