Bourgain algebras were introduced by \textit{J. A. Cima} and \textit{R. M. Timoney} [Mich. Math. J. 34, 99-104 (1987; Zbl 0617.46058)] in connection with Bourgain's work on the Dunford-Pettis property for certain function algebras. These algebras have been investigated by many authors (see the paper for several references). In the paper under review, the authors are concerned with the study of Bourgain algebras of a class of linear subspaces. Let \({\mathbb{D}}\) be the open unit disk and let \(T\) denote the unit circle in the complex plane \({\mathbb{C}}\). Let \(L^{ \infty}=L^{\infty}(T)\) and \(L^{ \infty}({\mathbb{D}})\) denote the usual spaces of essentially bounded measurable functions. The algebra of bounded continuous functions on \({\mathbb{D}}\) is denoted by \({\text BC}({\mathbb{D}})\) and the algebra of continuous functions on \(T\) is denoted by \(C=C(T)\). For a function \(f \in L^{\infty}\), let \(\widehat{f}\) denote the Poisson extension of \(f\) over the unit disk \({\mathbb{D}}\). For any nonempty subset \(B\) of \(L^{\infty}\), let \(\widehat{B}:=\{\widehat{f} : f \in B \}\). One of the goals of this paper is to find Bourgain algebras of the spaces \(\widehat{B}\) relative to \(L^{ \infty}({\mathbb{D}})\) and \({\text BC}({\mathbb{D}})\). The main result of this interesting paper is the following theorem (Theorem 1). If \(B\) is a closed linear subspace of \(L^{ \infty}\) containing \(C\), and \(B_b\) is the Bourgain algebra of \(B\) relative to \(L^{ \infty}\), then the Bourgain algebra of \(\widehat{B}\) relative to \(L^{ \infty}({\mathbb{D}})\) is \[ \widehat{(B)_b}= (B_b \cap QC) \widehat{}+ {\text V}, \] where \(QC\) is the algebra of quasi-continuous functions and \(V\) is the ideal of vanishing functions in \(L^{\infty}({\mathbb{D}})\).
