    \textit{J.-E. Pin} and \textit{D. Thérien} [Int. J. Algebra Comput. 3, 535- 555 (1993; Zbl 0816.20065)] inroduced, for each monoid \(M\), a suitable expansion \(\widehat M \to M\) which is related with a certain restricted type of the concatenation product, namely the bideterministic concatenation. For a (pseudo)variety \(\mathbf V\) of finite monoids, denote by \(\overline{\mathbf V}\) the smallest variety containing \(\mathbf V\) which is closed under the operator \(M \mapsto \widehat M\). Let \({\mathbf R} {\mathbf V}\) denote the class of all finite monoids whose regular elements form a submonoid which lies in \(\mathbf V\) and \(\mathbf U\) the class of all finite monoids satisfying the (pseudo)equations \(x(xy)^ \omega = (xy)^ \omega = (xy)^ \omega y\). Based on results of Pin and Thérien, the author shows that \(\overline{\mathbf V} = {\mathbf R}{\mathbf V} \cap {\mathbf U}\) for any variety \(\mathbf V\) of idempotent monoids and deduces equational descriptions of \(\overline{\mathbf V}\).
