    The main results of this paper are about the non-existence of both nodal and one-signed solutions of the problem \((g(t) G_ p(u'))'+ g(t) f(u)= 0\), \(u(0)\neq 0\), \(u(T)= 0\), \(T> 0\), under the assumptions that: \(G(p)\in C^ 1(\mathbb{R})\), \(G\) is strictly convex on \(\mathbb{R}\), \(G(0)= G_ p(0)= 0\), \(f\in C(\mathbb{R})\), \(uf(u)> 0\) for \(u\neq 0\), \(g\in C(\mathbb{R}^ +_ 0)\cap C^ 1(\mathbb{R}^ +)\), \(g(0)= 0\), \(g> 0\), \(g'\geq 0\) on \(\mathbb{R}^ +\). In particular, the authors extend the non-existence result of \textit{F. V. Atkinson}, \textit{H. Brezis} and \textit{L. A. Peletier} [C. R. Acad. Sci., Paris, Sér. I 306, No. 16, 711-714 (1988; Zbl 0696.35059)] to a much wider class of equations including those arising from the degenerate Laplace operator and the mean curvature operator.
